This car was the proto-type, which was put together prior to the other cars. Probably around March or April of 1985. Spiker Ford in Milford, MI donated it with the understanding it would be sent back to the dealership once it had served its purpose.
The car had a different stripe scheme on each side so Mercury could choose the one they wanted for production. The un-used scheme was on the driver’s side & featured a different red strobe decal that started from the door & wrapped around to the hatch. This alternate stripe design was like the one featured on the side of the Trans-Am Series Capri’s. The car did not have any of the ASC McLaren components installed at this point.

Pictured above is the rear with the prototype decals & after the change
The passenger side of the 1st prototype decal scheme. Notice the red Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Motorsport decal on the fender.
Mercury then picked the style they liked, which turned out to be the passenger side. The un-used scheme was removed & the decals that were chosen were added to the driver’s side to match the rest of the car.
ASC then installed the light covers, ground effects, & rear wing.
The Ford Lincoln / Mercury Motorsport decal remained on the upper fender in red after the change for a short time. It would be eventually removed before the car was shipped downtown. That decal would not be re-installed on the air dam. The car would also be without the Capri GS deck lid emblems. Those were removed to accommodate the original decal scheme which wrapped around were the emblems would be on the left side of the hatch. The emblems were never re-installed.

2nd version of the prototype featuring the ASC McLaren features. The red Motorsport decal is still on the fender at this point.
After the race weekend, the car was sent back to Spiker Ford to be used in their showroom. It was sold to an older gentleman who was a teacher. He had to sell it 1 year later due to too many speeding tickets. The car has been with its current owner since then & is one of the lowest mile examples around.
The car is currently for sale.
