There were 3 or 4 cars made for the use on the track.

2 pace cars & 1 or 2 safety cars

1 pace car was strictly for the Grand Prix. The other one doubled as the pace car for the Mercury Motor City 100(which was ran the day before the Grand Prix) & also as the back up for the Grand Prix.

This one was the main pace car for the Grand Prix.

It appears that this car was not sold through a Mercury new car dealership. The first owner bought it off a Ford used car lot on 9 Mile & Gratiot in Roseville, MI. The car appears to have been used for other race related purposes after the Detroit Grand Prix. It possibly went on to be used as a pace car for the Trans Am Series.

When the original owner purchased it, the mileage was already at 1000.

The car received cosmetic modifications just like the other cars. Additional decals were added after Graphik Concepts put on the standard set but before the Detroit Grand Prix. An "official pace car" black decal went on both doors. The back up pace car & safety car also had these black decals.

"The car sports "Bendix Brake - Trans:Am Racing Series" decals on the lower doors. Bendix Brakes were the sponsor for the Trans Am race series in 1985. A white "Motorcraft" front bumper decal was also added.

There are "Cribie" & "Ford Motorsport" decals in the side rear windows. Also present is a SCCA decal on the bottom of the air dam. There is also a 140 MPH Speedometer but the most interesting feature is a shaker hood scoop from a 1969/70 Mustang. It is a functional Ram Air set up. The hood was re-enforced with a metal plate in front of the cut opening.

The scoop looks great from the outside but rough on the underside. The entire set up seems to have been added after the car served it original purpose.

Red mesh ASC McLaren wheels were added on later too.

When the first owner bought the car, all of the above modifications were already in place. The current owner likes to refer to the other 29 Motorsport Capri’s as "The Replica’s".
